Derek Tierney

Recently appointment as Secretary General of the Department of Health, Derek brings over thirty years’ experience across a wide range of organisations in both the public and private sectors, including extensive work across Government Departments and State Agencies. In his current role within the Department of Health, Derek holds responsibility for the delivery of Health Infrastructure, including ICT and Digital Health. He also oversees the Sláintecare Programme Office, coordinating the implementation of Sláintecare across the health system.
Prior to this role, Derek was seconded as Programme Director to the Government’s COVID‑19 Vaccination Taskforce. During his time in the Civil Service, he has held a number of senior roles across Government Departments, including leading whole‑of‑Government responses to Brexit and Mortgage Arrears.
Earlier in his career, Derek gained experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing, the computer and telecommunications sectors, followed by delivery and commercial operations roles on the Luas light rail system.
Derek’s presentation will provide an overview of Ireland’s digital health strategy and outline the key priorities for the next ten years.
