Vanya Gant is a clinician and has a PhD in Cellular Immunology. This latter subject kindled his interest in academic medicine and diagnostics ever since. He is qualified in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and is currently Divisional Clinical Director for Infection at UCLH, having also led UCLH Pathology for several years and contributed to the core concepts, values and delivery of HSL.
He has always been passionate about pathology and diagnostics: as a junior doctor he set up one of the UK’s first lymphocyte subset analysis services and went on to re-design flow cytometers for analysing bugs rather than white cells. He leads the Clinical infection service for UCLH’s large haematological malignancy Division and innovates and drives several strategic development projects for UCLH Trust.
He co-authored a book on Artificial Neural Networks in Clinical Medicine, was Principal Clinical Investigator for a novel “sample in/answer out” bacterial/viral detection platform currently undergoing EU accreditation and is now Co-Principal Investigator for an innovative NIHR Programme grant on antimicrobial resistance. He has a keen interest in optimizing Industry Pullthrough from academic innovation; this as advisor and Consultant for both the UK’s Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) and several large academic research consortia. He founded 2 Infection Management Companies, which he now directs.
He is particularly proud of curating and helping to develop the UK’s Find and Treat service, a unique mix of mobile diagnostics and innovative healthcare delivery for the UK’s poorest, and being a Trustee for the Pathway Charity for the Homeless.
