Fergus is one of Ireland’s most experienced and accomplished healthcare executives.
He began his career in the insurance industry where he specialised in insurance and risk management for the health service. He established a specialist healthcare division for Marsh (NYSE: MMC) in Ireland and went on to become that firm’s European Healthcare Practice Leader.
Governance and risk management advice to the health sector was a core service offered by the division that Fergus led in Marsh. He spun out these advisory services into a consulting firm which he established in 2001. Circa Healthcare Consulting grew rapidly. The firm built an impressive client list, including most of Ireland’s academic teaching hospitals, all leading private hospitals, and health boards. In his capacity as Managing Partner, Fergus was lead advisor to the Government on the establishment of the Clinical Indemnity Scheme operated by the State Claims Agency. In 2004 Circa was acquired by Aon (NYSE: Aon), thus establishing Aon Healthcare which remains the largest provider of insurance and risk management services to the Irish health sector.
In his consulting role Fergus had been advisor to the board of the Mater Private. Following the sale of Circa, he joined the Mater Private to succeed the then CEO. In 2007 he led a management buy-out of the business. When he took over at the Mater Private it was a single hospital in Dublin. Fergus oversaw the opening of the company’s first off-site venture, which was a cancer centre in Limerick. This is co-located with University Hospital Limerick and is Ireland’s first hospital-based public-private partnership.
Fergus subsequently negotiated a joint-venture with the NHS in England, which resulted in the opening of a cancer centre in Liverpool. The Clatterbridge Private Clinic is owned by a Mater Private/NHS joint ventrue company. Fergus was Chairman of the board of the JV company from its foundation until December 2016.
