Co-founder, Chief Executive & Director of Operations
Claire studied Psychology at university in the 1980’s and animal learning became her passion. She became involved in some of the early research into the physiological and psychological effects of companion animals on humans. Claire is a registered canine behaviourist, was Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and has worked as a consultant to assistance dog charities around the world. Claire’s fascination with human-pet interaction developed when working first as a trainer and later as Director of Operations & Research at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in the UK.
She has been involved in the training of dogs for scent tasks for over twenty years. In 2003, she was the Training Director of the first programme in the world to train dogs to identify cancer by odour. The findings of this study were published in the British Medical Journal (September 2004). This work has now continued with Claire co-founding the UK charity Medical Detection Dogs in 2008, which is involved in a number of studies to detect cancer by associated volatiles including breast, renal, bladder and prostate and she is currently Chief Executive & Director of Operations. In 2011, Claire was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the development of new approaches for the detection of life-threatening diseases. In January 2015 she was awarded a British Citizen Award.
