Blood Sugar Trampoline:Patient Speaker

I am a Diabetes Ireland volunteer, an advocate, a conference organiser, blogger and person with diabetes.I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1993,when I was 20. It turned my whole world upside down. It took a long time but my world did right itself to a new kind of normal.  Since then, I’ve married, lived abroad, had two children, and became a volunteer & patient advocate with Diabetes Ireland.

I started volunteering with Diabetes Ireland 10 years ago when I had hit an all time low in my diabetes care and was desperate to connect with others like me.  I helped to set up and organise Diabetes Support Groups in Co. Clare and Public Information Events on Diabetes. In 2012, I edited, adapted and secured funding for the Irish version of the Type 1 Diabetes Starter Kit.  In October 2015, I led the team that organised Thriveabetes; a type 1 diabetes conference whose mission is to Inform, Motivate, and Inspire. Blood Sugar Trampoline is my blog: a combination of a personal diary about living with type 1 diabetes in Ireland and a way to share information with others on their own diabetes journeys. It’s also good therapy for when days are tough.

“I feel that living with type 1 diabetes is sometimes like being on a trampoline, except you can never get off. It doesn’t take long for us to get tired of all that bouncing. It’s not any fun!”
